Istio – là ứng dụng service mesh mã nguồn mở, có sử dụng phần Envoy proxy như sidecar để thực hiện các tính năng proxy và control plane (API gateway/proxy + service discovery + load balancing + auth point + etc…).
Istio chạy on top of k8s , ko cạnh tranh mà xen lẫn, để khi phát triển mạnh thì cùng với k8s làm những PaaS cổ điển như OpenShift và Cloud Foundry trở thành obsolete/redundant) .
